The Gandhi, King, Ikeda Community Builders Prize was established in 2001 jointly by the
Martin Luther King Jr. International Chapel and the Gandhi Center for Reconciliation of
Morehouse College, Atlanta, Georgia. Lawrence Edward Carter Sr., is the first Dean of the Martin Luther King Jr. International Chapel. The Community Builders Prize is given to individuals who exemplify the pacifist ideals of
Mahatma Gandhi, Martin Luther King Jr. and SGI President Daisaku Ikeda, and who are deemed to be
worthy successors and exemplary leaders among global citizens.
- 2001 Recipient - His Royal Highness Prince El Hassan bin Talal of Jordan, president
of the Club of Rome
- 2002 Recipient - Dr. Michael Nobel, board chair of the Nobel Family Society and the
Nonviolence Project.
- 2003 Recipient - Ms. Betty Williams, internationally
renowned advocate for women and children, Nobel Peace Prize laureate and founder of Ireland's Community of Peace
People.
- 2004 Recipients - F. W. de Klerk and Nelson Mandela. Mr. de Klerk established the F W de Klerk Foundation and Mr. Mandela is the founder of the Nelson Mandela Foundation which is committed to conflict resolution, to the removal of poverty as well as improving the health of the public, especially in regard to terminal diseases; to bring hope to the people of South Africa and of the world.
- 2005 Recipient - The GKI Community Builders Award was presented to Rabbi Michael Lerner. Michael Lerner is distinguished in his efforts to bring about peace between the Israelis and Palestinians.
- 2006 Recipient - Desmond Tutu, archbishop emeritus of Cape Town, South Africa, was awarded the prize in recognition of his effort for peace.
